GRANT OPPORTUNTIES BY AREAS OF SERVICE/FOCUS

While clearinghouse sites (like Grants.Gov) are useful tools (particularly when they have refined search capabilities), it is often much less daunting for program providers to explore opportunities through the lens of the work they are doing.  In this regard, funding opportunities can be found by going directly to the agencies responsible for the area of service.

In many instances, the web resources made available by the organization simply provide information about their programs and general information on funding opportunities available through them.  In these instances, users are then pointed to the GrantsGov or FedBiz sites to obtain specific regarding application.

However, many funding agencies also provide specific links enabling users to link directly into funding applications.   This is particularly true at the state and local levels within Arizona, where there is not a central clearing house for government grant opportunities (like there is at the federal level).

Below is a list of general service areas into which funding opportunities can be divided.  Within each service area specific resources related to funding have been identified.  This resource guide provides links to ARRA specific opportunities as well as some outside ARRA.  Non-ARRA resources are included because they represent opportunities for building capacity which should not be ignored simply because they stand outside of ARRA.  In addition, they are resources and opportunities which will likely continue well after ARRA efforts have come to completion.

In reviewing the list, it is important to consider that in some instances funding opportunities do not fit neatly into any one area.  For example, do grants in “arts education” belong in “education” or “arts”?  Similarly, do you keep grants from one agency in one category or if their opportunities speak to several areas do you list the agency resource multiple times in the different categories?  The goal of this resource guide is to ultimately have such opportunities cross referenced and/or separated out, however please do not assume this to be the case and take the time to explore possibilities (particularly as this resource guide continues to be developed).

While this area is still under construction -- and thus updates and additions should be expected -- it is also important to note that this resource guide is targeted primarily for nonprofits and thus some agencies and some contract opportunities simply are not represented (i.e - Department of Transportation highway construction work).  That said, there are opportunities embedded within these links which reach beyond nonprofits and do speak to other sectors like schools, local, county, tribal governments, and even individuals.  These resources have been included here because often the work of certain nonprofits center around strengthening these entities (rather than building on their work), and in these efforts knowledge and information about such resources may be of value.
