Explore your Options in Unemployment Insurance:
Limit your Liability and Hold Down Costs

How your organization manages its unemployment will have a major effect on your operating budget. Are you maximizing your efforts to control your state unemployment insurance costs?
Nonprofits typically have fewer unemployment claims than the private sector; therefore, they often subsidize the state unemployment fund by paying more than necessary. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, you can elect to opt out of the state system and choose to self-insure and reimburse the state dollar-for-dollar for actual unemployment benefits paid. With this method you are no longer financing the costs of other employers’ layoffs, and you are not paying extra funds you will never receive back. You’ll be able to allocate the funds you save back to your program and other expenses.
