2006 Budget May See Deeper Cuts

The House is pushing to increase spending cuts in the 2006 budget from $35 billion to $50 billion to pay for post-Katrina recovery. House leadership halted a voted the week of October 17 because of a lack of support for increased cuts, but continues to work towards deeper cuts at the committee level. Senate Postpones Estate Tax and Budget Hearings after Katrina

The Senate postponed a vote concerning the repeal of the estate tax and hearings on budget cuts outlined in the 2006 budget resolution in light of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. There have been calls from Democrats and some moderate Republicans to hold off on tax and budget cuts in light of Hurricane Katrina, while conservative members of Congress are pushing for additional budget cuts to compensate for Katrina-related spending.
