Published in partnership with the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, the new digital magazine, GivingHopeAZ, made its debut this week. Its mission is to inform, educate and inspire nonprofits and the giving community to work together to enhance the quality of life in Arizona. Aimed at both nonprofits and the businesses supporting them, the new publication is focused on new ways for businesses to assist nonprofits beyond writing checks, real-world success stories, best practices, tactics, and strategies. The premier issue of GivingHopeAZ Magazine features articles on Crisis Communication, the Dos and Don'ts of TV interviews, an interview with the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield writing about Trends in Nonprofits, and much more.
Many Arizona nonprofits were caught off-guard this past July when a letter sent to tribes from the Arizona Department of Gaming seemed to suddenly stop the flow of millions of dollars from tribal casinos to local nonprofit agencies. The Alliance worked with the Department of Gaming to help resolve the issue on behalf of Arizona's nonprofit community.

According to a September 8th article in the Arizona Daily Star, recent rule clarifications by the Arizona Department of Gaming could threaten contributions from casino-owning tribes to nonprofit organizations. A clarification of information in tribal casino compacts seems to require that funds go directly to Arizona cities, towns, counties, or the Commerce and Economic Development Commission Local Communities Fund and that those dollars may not be allocated direcly to 501(c)(3) organizations or other charitable entities. It is also currently unclear whether or not processes can be put in place for those municipalities to then re-distribute the funds to nonprofits. We recently polled our Member organizations to see what they think about the potential impact of this recent clarification.
The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits is always on the lookout for strategic new ways to enhance the services we provide. One way we do this is by partnering with organizations that specialize in areas that can advance our mission to help Arizona nonprofits be the best they can be. While the Alliance does offer training to both Member and Not-Yet-Member organizations, we would love to do more. That's why we're excited to announce our new partnership with Arizona Nonprofit Academy to offer professional training opportunities, at reasonable prices, designed specifically for nonprofit organizations and the challenges they face.
On behalf of the Alliance Board of Trustees, we are thrilled to introduce our members to our new CEO: Kristen Wilson, CAE.
Kristen brings extensive leadership to the Alliance, most recently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA), the largest trade association in Arizona serving over 10,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs. Through her previous roles at ASBA, the ASU Foundation and the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, she brings over 12 years of association and nonprofit knowledge and expertise to her new role as Alliance CEO.
